Back in December, photographer Jonathan Canlas hosted a workshop titled “Film is Not Dead.” We were asked to create bouquets and flower arrangements for the photo shoot, and went with a “tropics meets country garden” look. These “F.I.N.D” workshops are all about bringing together a family of artists to learn about their uniqueness and passions, and it was truly a family event indeed! Our good friend and photographer, Ashley Goodwin, and her husband served as models, as well as Shilhi’s family!

We love how the bougainvillea bridal bouquet turned out. So girly, natural, and garden fresh.

For the large arrangements, the main focus was bright pink phalaenopsis orchids, surrounded by yellow aster, pink Hong Kong orchids, seeded eucalyptus, brunia berries, and asparagus ferns. Definitely an odd mix, but we have a ton of fun combining different textures, colors, and trying something that is outside the norm.

Our passion is to create deeply personalized floral decor for every occasion. We love any chance we can get to make something unique!

Thank you to Jonathan Canlas for this fabulous opportunity!

Scientific Name: Rosa Rubiginosa

Roses are probably best known for their thorny stems that have pricked all of us at least once in our lives. Rose plants can be as small as miniature tea roses and or as large as about 21 feet high since they can climb! These flowers “hybridize” easily, meaning they are bred using two different types of roses to create a new species of rose.

There are over 100 species of roses available, and the majority of these species are native to Asia. Some of the most common types of roses used for wedding arrangements are the standard rose, spray rose, and garden rose.

Standard roses grow on shrubs, are bushy and fragrant, and can be found in a variety of colors. Spray roses are quite a bit smaller than regular roses – they are a cluster of short stems attached to a single larger stem, so they can look very full in a bouquet. The garden rose is a hybrid rose that is the most expensive of the three. It is a large, lush, gorgeous open flower with many petals, and are often used as a substitute for peonies, when not available. They flourish in tropical climates and enjoy a lot of sunlight.

Roses add classic elegance and delicate color to bouquets and arrangements, making them a beautiful choice for wedding use.

Bouquets and centerpieces used white shell accents as part of the dressing, and we used a variety of silver mercury glass vases and votives from our rental collection. Although we had to move quickly, we love how the design turned out!

“Passion Roots not only did a beautiful job with the flowers for our wedding…they created these original and fabulous designs, and pulled everything together with only a week and a half notice before our wedding!! When the bouquets arrived the day of the wedding, I was speechless. They were breathtaking beautiful, extremely detailed, and incorporated all of the things that I had asked for. I highly recommend Passion Roots for all events! The quality of their work is matched only with the friendliness of their staff.”

Scientific Name: Hydrangea Macrophylla

Hydrangeas are native to the southern and eastern parts of Asia (mainly Indonesia, Japan, China, and Korea). These flowers usually grow as shrubs, about three feet high, but some are found on small trees. They prefer higher humidities to thrive. They are long lasting and easy to revive, and can uphold in warm temperatures, making them great in tropical areas and summer weddings. There are two descriptions of hydrangeas: “mop-head” and “lace-cap.” The mop-head hydrangeas are the large clumps of flowers that are most commonly found, while lace-cap hydrangeas are more delicate and loosely arranged.

Hydrangeas are available year round, but color and size will vary throughout the year. The biggest hydrangeas are found in summertime. Mainly hydrangeas are white, but can also be found in shades of pink, purple, blue and green. White and light blue variations are considered “standard,” while the other colors are considered “premium.” We believe in using flowers for their natural beauty, so we do not dye them.

Although beautiful, hydrangeas are not ideal for cake decorating due to the fact that they can be mildly toxic if ingested. They are soft in texture and color, making them perfect for wedding decor. Hydrangeas also make a great base for bridal bouquets and table arrangements because they are large, filling up lots of space, and are somewhat inexpensive.

February, especially with the Valentine holiday, is definitely a LOVE-filled month! So, when Tanna from The Wedding Café approached us about designing a window and display table for the café, we were more than thrilled to participate and honor this month with OUR love for all things weddings.

According to Shilhi, owner and lead designer of Passion Roots, the display could be categorized as ‘Classy Vintage Glam with Twists of Natural Elements’. “It’s based on my love of clean, romantic designs. I wanted to honor the season in between winter and spring – moody, airy, but fresh, and bathed in whites and soft greens. The vintage gold and silver mercury glass pieces definitely up the glam factor.”

While this could be perfect for a “winter wonderland wedding,” it is also a clean, timeless style that could be used for a wedding during any season. In the display she used white bell flowers, white poppies, white and green hydrangea and airplants, along with various silver and gold pieces, available from our rental collection.

The display will be up for the month of February, so be sure to stop by the café and see it in person!

A company by the name of Pantone, who’s team is often known as “the color people,” has named Emerald THE color for 2013! This rich and elegant shade of green is guaranteed to be one of the top trends in wedding palettes over the coming year. Identified with the gem that it shares a name with, emerald is the face of sophistication and has been known to represent positivity, energy, well being, and harmony. What else you could want for your marriage?

Floral decorations are one of the best ways to incorporate color into your ceremony, wedding attire, and reception. While there isn’t exactly a flower that comes in emerald green (without being dyed), green is a great color to use as an accent or a base, like with foliage and succulents.

Green is fantastic in the way that it is extremely versatile. It can be mixed with WHITE flowers for a classic and simple elegant look, with YELLOW and GOLD to look fabulously glam, or combined with HOT PINK and ORANGE for a vivid kick. This versatility also applies to the seasons. Emerald can be used in weddings during any time of the year – winter will look romantic, springtime greens looks garden fresh, summertime weddings can achieve a playful vibrance, and green in autumn looks rustic and warm.

Besides flowers, this dazzling jewel tone can be incorporated throughout your wedding with tulle, vases, lanterns, linens, bridal party attire and accessories (shoes, jewelry). However you choose to use emerald green, it’s sure to bring a great pop of color and a refreshing twist that other brides may not have attempted. Check out some of these inspiration boards we’ve put together featuring EMERALD!

The giving of leis (or floral garlands for those not familiar with the Hawaiian term) during a wedding ceremony is an island tradition used to express a couple’s love and commitment to each other. It could be compared to the lighting of a unity candle, or sand ceremony. It is also a way to show appreciation to parents or grandparents.

But it’s not limited to just those people – leis can be given to your officiant, bridal party (as an alternative to wearing a boutineer or carrying a bouquet), emcee, wedding coordinator – basically anyone you want to say a special thank you to! Leis can also be used to decorate your ceremony or reception areas.

Here are the some of the different lei options, and who they are usually given to:

Bride

Triple Strand Pikake lei (white, very fragrant and delicate, seasonal, an alternative to this is the Crown Flower lei)

Females (mothers, grandmothers, bridesmaids, etc.)

Dendrobium orchid lei (white, purple or green, either single or double strand, and can be mixed with rose spacers, non-fragrant and suitable for those with allergies, unisex. available year-round)

Tuberose lei (white, available in single or double strand, and can be mixed with rose spacers, usually available year-round)

White Micronesian ginger lei (fragrant, usually available year-round)

Triple Strand Crown Flower lei (white or light purple, non-fragrant, also available in single strands, seasonal)

Butterfly Orchid lei (white, purple or green, unisex, available year-round)

Ohai Alii lei (orange/yellow, unisex, usually available year-round)

Groom

Maile lei, hung around the shoulders (as opposed to tied in a circle) are either left plain or entwined with orchids or tuberose (available year-round). A more cost-effect is the look-alike ti leaf maile lei.

Males (fathers, grandfathers, groomsmen, ring bearer, etc.)

Plain Maile lei (usually just a single strand – the entwined version is left for the groom, available year-round)

Ti leaf Maile lei (available year-round)

Ti leaf rope lei (available year-round)

Kukui nut lei (black, brown or beige, can be mixed with shells and/or mock orange leaves, available year-round)

He’i (orange) or Seagrape (green) lei with mock orange leaves (available year-round)

Cigar lei (orange and coral/red, usually available year-round)

Another common lei is the haku, or head lei. It is usually created with a base of greenery, and adding orchids, roses and/or baby’s breath, in the couple’s color scheme. Haku’s are great for brides, flower girls or any special females you want to acknowledge. Just be sure to measure your head ahead of time so your florist can ensure the best fit. Haku’s also dry nicely, and can be preserved as a memento of your special day (not a good idea for destination brides as Hawaii’s agricultural restrictions prevent you from taking flowers out of the state).

Nikki and Jared hired us for both Event Styling and Florals. We had such a fun time working with this sweet couple, planning their wedding, and all the little special touches. Despite rain showers all throughout the day, Nikki and Jared had an amazing Sunset Ranch wedding.

Nikki and Jared chose to have their ceremony under the “big tree”, but wanted a little something more. One of our favorite touches was a 25-foot eucalyptus evergreen garland we designed for them, combined with a DIY project of tissue paper flowers, that served as a beautiful and unique focal point.

We used a variety of flowers to fit their monochromatic purple color scheme - fushia garden roses, purple lisianthus, purple anemones, burgundy dahlias, purple sweet peas, purple button poms, purple hydrangea, lavender spray roses, white ranunculus, succulents, ornamental kale, camilia leaves, seeded eucalyptus and fern accents.
