PLUSH: Mother’s Day Florals

My mom loved receiving flowers from my dad!  Even when money was tight, my dad would always find a way to send a creative flower arrangement to my mother on her birthday, their anniversary, and mother’s day.  He always found a fun way to surprise her with it – one time it involved waking her up at midnight by serenading her, and of course with flowers by her bedside.

When my parent’s bought their first flower shop in the early 1990′s, I remembered how much happiness flowers brought my mom. It was during this time that she discovered the art of flower arranging. For someone who appreciated flowers so much to begin with, creating bouquets and arrangements for other people just deepened her love of flowers all the more.

So this mother’s day I wanted to honor my mom by creating a classic design for a classy woman. Remember  - the classics came straight out of the garden so I designed an arrangement with a fresh, just-picked-from-the-garden feeling filled with ranunculus, lisianthus, sweet peas, budded branches, and ferns!  So please, celebrate mom with PLUSH, our new line of signature botanical art designs by Passion Roots & cupcakes from A Cake Life.

Flower Profile: Cymbidium Orchid

Every so often we plan on featuring a flower profile here on our blog, sharing with you a little about our favorite flowers and examples of how we’ve used them.  First up is the cymbidium orchid – enjoy!

Cymbidium, or Boat Orchid from the Brachiopod genus

Cymbidium orchids are a favorite among brides for weddings.  They are among the heartier of orchids and hold up better in the Hawaiian heat than other flowers.

They are available year round, but seasonal depending on the color.  While some cymbidiums are grown in Hawaii, surprisingly the majority are grown elsewhere – in Thailand, New Zealand and California nurseries. They are sold by the stem, and have between 8-15 blooms per stem.   Cymbidiums are available in white (with a variety of different colored centers), green, pink, yellow, orange and burgundy.

Cymbidiums are very versatile and can be used in bouquets, along with a matching boutineer, as hair flowers, in centerpieces and as cake toppers.   A whole stem can be submerged in a tall clear glass vase and used as aisle markers, then later repurposed as décor pieces.  Or a single bloom can be placed in a bud vase, and placed among a cluster for a more striking effect.  There are lots of wonderful ways to incorporate these beautiful orchids into your floral designs.

Hello!

passion008I’m excited you’re taking the time to learn more about Passion Roots! Whether you’re here to know more about what we do, grab some wedding inspiration or to learn more about flowers, you’ve come to the right place.

My name is Shilhi, sounds like shell and hi together. I know… lovely isn’t it? Can you tell I’ve had to explain my name for as long as I can remember? I am the creative director of Passion Roots. And, I like to call myself a floral stylist.

passion018A little about me—I’ll start with what I like…
I like silence. Ha. For just a bit. My favorite time is half an hour before the sun rises. The potential for the new day brews this amazing energy. I just want to bottle it up and carry it around with me all day.

I have a disease that won’t go away. It’s called cupcaketitis. It’s a scary word, I know. My hand sees one. I have no shame. It goes right in. Over and over again. I can’t watch those cake shows either. It’s torture that I can’t eat them right away.

My husband is beautiful, : ) enough said.

I have 2 beautiful children. I can’t help but use that word. They make me run when I don’t want too. My thighs thank them.

I grew up in the floral industry (my parents owned a shop!) but I was supposed to be a Dentist. Go figure. I know… lucky me, I followed my heart.

I’m amazed at God’s handiwork when I work with flowers. Every flower, leaf, plant, and stem are drenched with his creativity. It blows me away…

I love my job. I love my art. It’s my vocation. It shows when I hug you.

For years I’ve had this dream of creating a special space that screamed out inspiration to all those who would walk through my doors. I wanted a place where my hands and my soul could collide in creating pretty, crazy floral pieces with the beauty nature has given us. A big thank you to the talented Marina Miller of Red Heart Photo for capturing my studio. You will thank me when you check out her site. Her photo’s are eye candy!

Welcome to Passion Roots studio. So very excited you can come and visit! Come by and we may just have cupcakes to share with you!
